Purchasing an electronic motorway vignette afterwards does not automatically mean that a fine will not be imposed for the previous journey without a valid electronic motorway vignette. In Slovakia, checks are carried out automatically using camera systems and also by the relevant control authorities. We therefore recommend always verifying the validity of your electronic motorway vignette before entering a chargeable road section.

For which vehicles is an electronic motorway vignette mandatory in Slovakia?

In Slovakia, an electronic motorway vignette is mandatory mainly for passenger cars, SUVs, vans and motorhomes with a maximum technically permissible weight of up to 3.5 tonnes. For certain vehicle combinations, a separate electronic motorway vignette may also be required for the trailer. If the maximum technically permissible weight of the vehicle combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes, one electronic motorway vignette for the towing vehicle is generally sufficient. However, if the maximum technically permissible weight of the vehicle combination exceeds 3.5 tonnes, a second electronic motorway vignette is generally required in Slovakia for the trailer as well.

Does an annual electronic motorway vignette always have to start on 1 January?

No. The Slovak 365-day electronic motorway vignette is not linked to the calendar year and its validity does not have to begin on 1 January. When purchasing the vignette, you can choose the start date of its validity, and from that date it will remain valid for the following 365 days. For example, if you select 15 July as the start date, the electronic motorway vignette will remain valid until 14 July of the following year.

Until when is a 1-day electronic motorway vignette valid?

The Slovak 1-day electronic motorway vignette is always valid only on the calendar day selected during the purchase process. It is therefore not a 24-hour vignette calculated from the moment of its activation. For example, if you choose 10 August as the validity date, the electronic motorway vignette will be valid from 00:00 to 23:59 on that day. Even if you purchase the vignette on 10 August at 14:00, it will still be valid only until 23:59 on the same day. These rules are established by Slovak legislation and apply to all 1-day electronic motorway vignettes.

The start of validity of your Slovak electronic motorway vignette depends on the date you select when placing your order. If you choose the current date, the vignette will be valid from that day.
